winter sports injuries healed each year
Known among skiers and snowboarders across the world for their advanced treatment of winter sports injuries, the Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital has always been a pioneer in technology, innovation and optimal patient care. So when doctors asked for better ways to discuss medical data with patients, the IT department turned to mobile technology from SAP.

SAP Mobile Platform, SAP Electronic Medical Record, SAP Afaria
The second largest hospital in the federal state of Salzburg, Austria, the Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital is known almost around the world for their optimal treatment of winter sports athletes. No matter what the medical need, the institution focuses on providing the best patient care.
Professional and social skills
The Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital is committed to restoring the physical, mental, and psychological health of their patients to support the healing process. The hospital is known for providing unique personal care, with time set aside for the individual needs of each patient, and technology paving the way for continued success.
Allocating time for each patient
For the doctors at the Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital, speed and transparency are very important. Thanks to an early implementation of a central hospital information system, the hospital’s IT department had built an extensive patient file system over the years. What was still missing was a way of presenting this data bedside to the doctor.
After reviewing their specific requirements with SAP, it soon became clear that SAP Electronic Medical Record was the ideal solution to provide doctors with the flexibility they were looking for. And the combination with SAP Afaria as the mobile device management solution was critical to keeping confidential patient data secure.
Once SAP EMR was selected, the hospital´s IT department and SAP Consulting collaborated on customizing and integrating the solution. The initial project was completed quickly: after just two weeks of implementation and one week of testing, the hospital’s orthopedic ward successfully went live with SAP EMR.
Remote implementation keeps costs low
By implementing SAP EMR, the Kardinal Schwarzenberg Hospital can now bring medical data to the doctor’s fingertips on iPads or Android tablets. During daily ward rounds, doctors can access all relevant patient information – even medical PACS images – in real-time, and discuss them with the patient on the spot.
Answering patient questions immediately
The real benefit: doctors can easily use real-time information in their daily work, ensuring their time with patients is worthwhile for both parties. This saves time and money, helps patients make informed decisions, and greatly improves overall service quality.
A tool doctors can use every day
Today, the benefits of the new mobile app are clearly visible. Patients see that doctors can react more quickly to conditions, and in cases such as complicated surgery, they can discuss it with the doctor in more detail, see relevant data on the mobile device, and have the doctor explain the procedure.
An advantage to the patient
Also, since confidentiality of patient data is key, SAP Afaria enables the hospital’s IT department to administer and configure mobile devices and securely manage patient data. The SAP Mobile Platform can make sure only relevant data is shown.
